SharePoint (Excel): Connection guide

Connect an Excel file stored in SharePoint to Funnel. This guide covers the credentials you need, the permissions your app needs, how to find your site name, and how to format your sheets so the data imports correctly.

Credentials

  • Client secret: Enter the secret's Value, not the Secret ID. Using the Secret ID causes the error "Failed to store credentials".

  • Permissions: The app you use for Funnel needs one of these Microsoft Graph permissions:

- Sites.Selected, granted on your own SharePoint site, or
- Sites.Read.All

Site name and file URL

  • Site name is the part of the SharePoint URL that comes after /sites/. For example, in https://yourcompany.sharepoint.com/sites/Marketing/... the site name is Marketing.

  • If you see "Requested site could not be found", check the site name and that the app has access to that site.

  • On large sites, you can enter the file's URL instead of browsing for it. This helps avoid timeouts.

Sheet requirements

To import cleanly, each sheet should have:

  • Headers in row 1.

  • Unique header names (no two columns with the same name).

  • Real date and number formats, not dates or numbers stored as text.

  • No text values such as "N/a" or "#VALUE!" in number or date columns.

  • Currency settings for monetary columns.

There's an option to drop rows with invalid dates. Use it with care: rows with a bad date are skipped without warning, so you can lose data without noticing.

A column can't be set to Number

What you see: When you connect, a column (for example "Circulation") can't be set to the Number type.

Why it happens: Funnel detects each column's type by sampling its values. If any cell isn't numeric (for example "N/A", a dash, text or a blank space), or if the column is formatted as Text in Excel, the whole column is treated as text.

What to do:

  1. Clean the column so every cell holds a number or is empty.

  2. Convert numbers stored as text. For example, use Paste Special > Multiply by 1 in Excel.

  3. Reconnect the data source.

Common errors

Error

What to check

Failed to store credentials

Use the client secret Value, not the Secret ID.

Requested site could not be found

Check the site name (the part after /sites/) and the app's access to that site.

Timeouts or errors reading the file

Enter the file URL directly, and check the sheet requirements above.

If you still can't connect, contact Funnel support.
