How Data Chat works
What is Data Chat?
Data Chat is a conversational interface in Funnel that lets you ask questions about your data and get instant answers with automatically generated charts. You can save these charts to dashboards and open them in Data Explorer for deeper analysis.
Am I interacting with a human when I use Data Chat?
No. Data Chat is an artificial intelligence (AI) system. Its responses are AI-generated.
How does Data Chat work?
Data Chat interprets your question, plans a query based on your workspace data, runs the query inside Funnel, and returns an answer with a suggested chart or visualization along with an explanation.
What sources does Data Chat use to create responses?
Data Chat uses Funnel's public help documentation and your Funnel workspace to create responses.
What can I ask Data Chat?

Can Data Chat take actions in Funnel?
No. Data Chat is read-only and cannot make changes to settings, edit data, or perform any actions in Funnel. It can only query and display your data.
Can I share my chats with other workspace members?
Not yet. Conversations are private to each user and cannot be shared with other workspace members. You can use the Open in Data Explorer feature and share outcomes as a view, or save charts to dashboards to share insights.
Can Data Chat access data from different workspaces?
No. Data Chat is per workspace and cannot look across subscriptions. The conversations are also per user. Other users in your workspace cannot see your conversations.
How long are my chats kept?
Chats that are inactive for more than 60 days are automatically deleted. To keep important conversations, save charts to dashboards or export the data.
How accurate is the content from Data Chat?
Data Chat is designed to provide helpful insights and summaries. However, as with all AI systems, we recommend you review all generated content for accuracy and context before using it in your final reports.
What are workspace instructions?
Workspace instructions let you customize how Data Chat responds to questions across your workspace. After you add a workspace instruction, Data Chat uses these instructions whenever you ask a question. Workspace instructions are set globally across your workspace and apply to all users.
Workspace instructions take priority over instructions you give in the conversational interface and are immediately applied to all chats. You can use workspace instructions to define business context, terminology, and preferred metrics.
Data privacy and security
Does Data Chat train on my data?
No. Your inputs are not used to train AI models. We use inference-only configuration, which means your prompts and context guide outputs at runtime, but model weights never change. We do not train on your data.
What data does Data Chat access?
Data Chat accesses only data already in your Funnel workspace. It sees a minimal summary of query results and metadata, not your full raw data. It respects existing permissions and can only access data sources, dashboards, or views you have permission to view.
Is any data sent to third parties?
No. All AI processing happens inside Funnel's secure infrastructure. Your data is not sent to third parties for processing.
Where does processing happen?
Processing runs on AWS within Funnel's hosting regions and complies with GDPR requirements. All processing happens inside Funnel's secure infrastructure.
How long is data kept?
Customer data is retained for 30 days after workspace deletion, according to our standard policy.
Can we disable AI features?
Yes. Contact your Funnel contact or Customer Success Manager to disable AI features for your subscription.
What is the difference between training and inference?
Training: Permanently changes model weights with data and creates a new model that retains customer data.
Inference: Temporary, runtime behavior using prompts and context with no weight changes. Inputs are not used to train any model.
Data Chat uses inference-only configuration.
Limitations
What are Data Chat's limitations?
Data Chat has the following limitations:
Read-only: Cannot take actions in Funnel or make changes to settings or data.
Scope: Can only work with data and features that exist in Funnel. It cannot create new chart types beyond what's available today.
Context: Sees a minimal summary of query results and metadata, not your full raw data.
Chat privacy: Conversations are private to each user and cannot be shared with other workspace members.
Complex analysis: For complex multi-step analysis, you may need to open Data Explorer for more advanced capabilities.
Beta status: This feature is in beta and may have limitations or changes as it evolves.
Can Data Chat replace detailed analysis?
Data Chat is designed for quick insights and exploration, not to replace detailed analysis. While it can provide some general recommendations, it does not aim to replace the need for detailed analysis. Complex questions that require measurement products or advanced analysis are better handled in Data Explorer or through other Funnel features.

Why didn't I get the response I expected?
If Data Chat doesn't return the results you expected, try:
Adding more context and details to your prompt
Specifying the format you want (chart type, breakdown)
Using exact metric and dimension names from your workspace
Breaking down complex questions into separate, focused queries
Asking follow-up questions in the same chat
Checking if workspace instructions are affecting your responses

Access and availability
Who can use Data Chat?
Data Chat is available to all Funnel customers on all plans. It's currently in beta, so you may need to have it enabled in your workspace. Reach out to your Funnel contact to enable this feature.
Is there a cost for Data Chat?
We don't intend to charge for Data Chat for now.
Are there limits on how many questions I can ask?
We don't have a limit now.
