Troubleshoot: Unknown client when connecting Funnel MCP in Notion

Resolve Funnel MCP connection failures in Notion that return invalid_request Unknown client during OAuth.

Problem summary

You try to connect Funnel MCP in Notion and authorization fails with an Unknown client error before you can use any Funnel MCP tools.

Error message or symptoms

invalid_request: Unknown client: https://app.notion.com/oauth/mcp-client-metadata.json

When does this occur

  • When you add or reconnect Funnel MCP in Notion and Notion shows the error during the connection or OAuth step

  • When the URL in the error identifies Notion as the MCP client Funnel could not recognize

  • When your MCP server URL is correct but Notion still cannot complete authorization before any Funnel MCP tool calls succeed

Root cause

Funnel had not registered Notion as an allowed OAuth MCP client. Authorization cannot complete until Funnel recognizes your MCP client's identity on the server side.

Solution

  1. Confirm your Remote MCP server URL matches your Funnel region:

    • Global (default): https://mcp.ai.funnel.io/mcp

    • EU: https://mcp.eu.ai.funnel.io/mcp

Copy Server URL from Connect Funnel MCP in Funnel AI full view (Data > Analyze > Funnel AI) if you are unsure which URL to use.

  2. Remove the Funnel MCP connection in Notion, add it again with the correct URL and complete OAuth in a new session.

  3. If you still see Unknown client, contact Funnel support. Include:

    • The full error text, including the client metadata URL (for example https://app.notion.com/oauth/mcp-client-metadata.json)

    • Your MCP server URL

    • That you are connecting from Notion

    • When the issue started

  4. Retry the connection in a new Notion session after support confirms your MCP client is registered on the Funnel side.
