Troubleshoot goals not attributed to spend, clicks and impressions in Microsoft Advertising

Understand why Microsoft Advertising goal data only applies to conversion metrics in Funnel and which metrics to use with goals.

Problem summary

When you break down Microsoft Advertising data by goal in Funnel, only conversion metrics are split by goal. Spend, clicks and impressions aren't attributed to individual goals.

Error message or symptoms

  • You split data by the Goal or Goal Type dimension.

  • Conversion metrics, such as Conversions and All Conversions, show values for each goal.

  • Spend, Clicks and Impressions don't show values for each goal.

When does this occur

  • You use the Goal or Goal Type dimension with Microsoft Advertising data.

  • You combine goal dimensions with metrics that aren't conversion metrics, such as Spend, Clicks or Impressions.

Root cause

Microsoft Advertising goals are only attributed to conversion metrics. Other metrics, such as Spend, Clicks and Impressions, aren't attributed to goals.

Solution

This is expected behavior. To report on goals:

  1. Use the Goal and Goal Type dimensions only with conversion metrics, such as Conversions, All Conversions, Revenue and All Revenue. For the fields in each report type, see Microsoft Advertising: Dimensions and metrics.

  2. Report Spend, Clicks and Impressions without splitting by Goal or Goal Type.
