Shopify: Connection guide

Connect Shopify to Funnel to import your store's sales, order, inventory and customer data.

Connect Shopify to Funnel to import your store's sales, order, inventory and customer data. You connect Shopify by installing the Funnel Shopify App in your store and creating a Shopify data source in your Funnel workspace.

Before you begin

Make sure you have:

  • The data source editor role, or higher, in the Funnel workspace where you want the data source.

  • A Shopify account with access to the store you want to connect.

  • Permission to install apps in that store. At a minimum you need the Manage and install apps and channels permission, which you can review in Shopify under Settings > Users and permissions.

If the store is not your own, get access as a staff member or a collaborator before you continue.

Get access to a store you do not own

Staff member access

A store owner or admin adds staff members, and each store has a limited number of staff seats that depends on its Shopify plan. Ask the owner or an admin to go to Settings > Users and permissions, add you as a user, and grant you the Manage and install apps and channels permission.

After the owner sends the invite, you receive an email from Shopify asking you to set up your account. Follow the link in the email to complete it. You are then ready to create the data source in Funnel.

Collaborator access

Request collaborator access from your Shopify Partner Dashboard: click Stores > Add store, select Managed store, and enter the store's myshopify.com URL. Shopify requires a 4-digit collaborator request code before it sends the request. The store owner generates this code in their Shopify admin under Settings > Users > Security and shares it with you. When you request access, select all of these permissions so that Funnel can install and read your data:

  • Orders

  • Products

  • Customers

  • Draft orders

  • Marketing

  • Analytics

  • Reports

  • Manage and install apps and channels

Connect Shopify to Funnel

Follow these steps to connect Shopify as a data source:

  1. In the left menu, go to Data > Connect > Data sources, and click + Connect data source.

  2. Find Shopify, and click Connect now.

  3. On the Authenticate step, click + Add credentials to authorize a new store, or select an existing set of credentials. If you do not have access yourself, click Request access to send the store owner a link to grant it.

  4. If you add credentials, you'll be prompted to log in to your Shopify account to authorize the Funnel app, click Update on the Shopify Update data access prompt.
You'll be redirected to the connection flow in Funnel after the authorization is complete.

  5. On the Select accounts step, choose the store you want to import from.

  6. On the Configure Data Sources step, select the report type and the dimensions and metrics you want to import. For the available fields, see Shopify: Dimensions and metrics.

  7. On the Confirm and connect step, confirm your settings to create the data source.

Funnel starts importing your Shopify data. For a Sales Transaction data source, Funnel first downloads the two most recent days, then backfills your full order history in chronological order. Depending on the number of orders, the full backfill can take from about an hour to several days.

Note: A Shopify app can only have one set of permissions, so the Funnel Shopify App requests access to personal data even when a data source is configured not to import Customer Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

Manage your connection

Connect an additional Shopify store

If you manage more than one Shopify store, Shopify opens the store you used most recently when you launch the Funnel app. As a result, you might not be prompted to choose a store during the connection process. Funnel connects the store that is currently active in Shopify, so select the correct store before you continue.

Shopify's store switcher lists the stores where you have an account under the same email address. To select the right store:

  1. Log in to the Shopify admin of one of your stores.

  2. Click your store name in the top bar to open the store switcher.

  3. Select the store you want to connect. If it is not listed, click View all and search for it by name.

  4. Open the Funnel app again from the store you selected.

  5. Continue with the connection in Funnel.

Important: Shopify authorizes the store that is active in the store switcher when you add credentials. Before you authorize, confirm that the correct store name is shown in the top bar.

If the store you want uses a different email address than your other stores, it does not appear in the store switcher. Log out of Shopify completely, or open a private (incognito) browser window, then log in with the account that has access to that store before you start.

Troubleshooting: Alternative workflow if you're unable to add another Shopify store

If the connection keeps defaulting to the wrong store, or the store you want does not appear, add its credentials directly:

  1. Log in to Shopify and switch to the store you want to connect.

  2. Open Funnel in a private (incognito) browser window, and start adding a Shopify data source with the same connect steps.

  3. On the Authenticate step, click + Add credentials.

  4. Log in to your Shopify account to authorize Funnel.

  5. When Shopify shows the Update data access prompt, click Update.

  6. Back in Funnel, select the new store's credentials, and continue with the connection.

The new store is now available as a set of credentials whenever you connect a Shopify data source.

Reconnect with a different Shopify user

Reconnecting swaps the Shopify credentials on an existing data source without removing your data, for example to move a source onto the store owner's account. To reconnect a Shopify data source under a different Shopify user:

  1. Log out of Shopify completely, or open a private (incognito) browser window.

  2. In Funnel, open the workspace that contains the Shopify data source, and go to Data > Connect > Data sources.

  3. Open the Shopify data source, and select Reconnect from the actions menu.

  4. When Shopify opens, log in as the user whose credentials you want to use.

  5. Authorize Funnel app in Shopify by clicking Update on the Shopify Update data access prompt.

  6. After Shopify redirects you back to Funnel, the data source resumes downloading under the new credentials.

New data is imported at the next scheduled download. If you have several Shopify stores to reconnect, repeat these steps for each data source, logging in and out of the relevant Shopify store each time.

Note: Reconnecting always applies to the same Shopify store the data source was originally connected to. To bring in a different store, create a new Shopify data source instead of reconnecting.

Stop or remove a data source

To pause or delete a Shopify data source, open it from Data > Connect > Data sources and use the actions menu. If you run into errors while connecting or downloading, see Shopify: Troubleshooting.
