What is the channel mapper for?
The Channel Mapper lets you define your preferred channel grouping in Adtriba, even when you do not use your usual web analytics tool. Map all incoming traffic with custom rules.
How does the channel mapper work?
The Channel Mapper uses a rule-based system. Create mapping rules based on Channel, Medium, Source, and Campaign.
Rule structure:
Within one rule, all conditions use an AND relationship.
Rules use an OR relationship.
Effect on Adtriba reports:
Channel Mapper mapping affects the hierarchy of channels, sources, and campaigns in Adtriba reports.
Map different sources, mediums, or campaigns into distinct channels or mediums.
Where to find the channel mapper
Click Channel Mapper in the main menu on the left.
Set up the channel mapper
Create a new channel mapping from scratch or duplicate an existing mapping from another project.
Create a new channel mapping:
Click Create New Mapping to define mapping rules.
Add conditions and rules:
Add multiple conditions to a single rule. Use + and - within the rule to add or remove conditions.
AND relationship and field values:
Conditions within one rule use an AND relationship. You cannot add multiple values in one field or one rule.
Example:
To map Criteo and Awin impressions into the channel Affiliate, create two separate rules:
Rule 1:
Source equals CriteoAND Channel equals Display Views
Action: Map to Channel Affiliate
Copy this rule and replace Criteo with Awin.
Rule 2:
Source equals AwinAND Channel equals Display Views
Action: Map to Channel Affiliate
Add and manage rules:
Copy an existing rule and modify it for new conditions.
Click + next to a saved rule to add a new rule.
Delete rules:
Click - next to the rule you want to delete.
Instant preview:
Use the Preview function to check whether your rules work as expected.
Resolve rule conflicts
The Channel Mapper can show conflicts that affect mapping.
Conflict #1: Rule conflicts with #6
This conflict occurs when you map a source or campaign that another rule already references.
Conflict #2: Rule matches against the result of an existing mapping
This error occurs when you apply rules to channels that your own rules created. This can cause incorrect mapping.
Conflict #3: Rule conflicts with #0
This conflict can occur due to technical issues or data inconsistencies. Perform a hard refresh of the page. After the refresh, the conflict should no longer appear.
Understand rule conflicts and rule hierarchy
Conflicts do not disable the conflicting rules. The rules still work. Conflicts indicate that sources or campaigns in one rule also match the conditions of another rule.
Rules are arranged in a hierarchy. The first rule applies first, then the second, and so on. If a data row matches two rules, the higher rule in the hierarchy applies.
The conflict message This rule conflicts with #4 indicates that the row could also match a lower rule.
If the rules are in the correct hierarchy, sources and campaigns map to the correct channels.
Channel mapper FAQ
When do channel mapping changes appear in reporting?
Changes can take up to 24 hours to appear in performance reports. Use the Preview function for immediate validation.
Note: Channel Mapper changes can take up to two days to appear in the Spend Mapper.
Do changes apply to historic data?
Yes. Channel mapping applies to all historical and new traffic data in your reports.
What limitations apply?
All fields in the Channel Mapper must have a value. Do not leave fields blank.
The Channel Mapper supports regular expressions (regex).
Do I need to be case sensitive when defining rules?
Update 28/02/2023:
The Channel Mapper supports case-sensitive and case-insensitive rules. You can define rules to apply in a case-sensitive or non-case-sensitive way.
The Channel Mapper also supports case-sensitive operators. The previous version used only case-insensitive operators. Existing rules are not affected. You may see IGNORE CASE on current rules. You can change existing rules to case sensitivity or create new case-sensitive rules.
How is traffic clustered without the channel mapper?
Adtriba creates a default channel grouping with the definitions below:
Important notes:
Click Save when your rules are correct. After many changes, you may see a conflicting rules message. When you click Save, Adtriba stores a copy of the configuration so it can be restored.
New or recent campaigns may take time to redistribute after you apply Channel Mapper rules.
Example:
If you set this rule:
IF channel =
affiliatethen map toAffiliate
Campaigns with channel = affiliate can take 1 or 2 days to redistribute to Affiliate.
