Prerequisites for setting up Google Ads Conversion Upload with Funnel Activate

Prepare your data and ad platform setup to successfully launch and validate Funnel Activate.

Updated this week

Before setting up a Google Ads conversion upload with Funnel Activate, make sure the following prerequisites are completed.

This article outlines:

  1. Data requirements in Funnel Data Hub

  2. Google Ads conversion action setup

  3. How to validate that the upload works as expected

The same principles apply to other Activate conversion uploads, but this guide focuses specifically on Google Ads.

1. Ensure Your Conversion Data Is Available in Data Hub

Your conversion data must be available in Funnel before you can activate a Google Ads upload.

1.1 Connect Your Conversion Data Source

Your data can be connected through:

  • A core Funnel connector such as CRM, e-commerce platforms or Data Warehouses

  • A spreadsheet import

  • An SFTP or file import

After connecting, confirm that your dataset includes:

At least one Google-supported user identifier:

  • gclid (recommended)

  • gbraid

  • wbraid

  • Email address

  • Phone number

And:

  • Conversion time

  • Conversion value

2. Create a Secondary Conversion Action in Google Ads

Before activating the upload, create a conversion action in Google Ads that will receive the data.

We recommend duplicating an existing conversion action to make comparison easier.

2.1 Duplicate an Existing Conversion Action

In Google Ads:

  1. Go to Goals

  2. Click Conversions

  3. Select an existing conversion action similar to what you want to upload

  4. Duplicate it

Rename it clearly, for example:
“Purchase – Funnel Activate Test”

2.2 Set the Conversion Action to Secondary

Edit the duplicated conversion action and:

  • Set it as Secondary, not Primary

  • Keep counting and attribution settings consistent with the original

Using a secondary action ensures:

  • No impact on bidding strategies during testing

  • Safe validation before switching to production

Make sure the conversion action is saved and visible in the Conversions overview.

3. Set Up the Google Ads Conversion Upload in Activate

Once the prerequisites above are complete:

  1. Go to Activate in your Funnel workspace

  2. Create a new destination

  3. Select Google Ads

  4. Authenticate the correct Google Ads account

  5. Select the duplicated secondary conversion action

  6. Map the required fields:

    • Identifier

    • Conversion time

    • Conversion value

  7. Review and activate the upload

After activation, monitor the first successful sync to ensure data is delivered.

4. Validate That the Upload Works

To properly evaluate performance, run a parallel test.

4.1 Run Both Conversion Actions in Parallel

Keep:

  • The original conversion action running as Primary

  • The Funnel Activate conversion action running as Secondary

Let both run in parallel for at least 7 days.
If you have long sales cycles or delayed conversions, extend the period accordingly.

4.2 Compare Attributed Conversions

In Google Ads, go to Goals → Conversions → Summary

Compare:

  • The original conversion action

  • The Funnel Activate test conversion action

A successful Activate setup will typically show:

  • Higher attributed conversions in the All conversions column

  • Improved visibility of conversions that were previously unattributed or undercounted
